Employee Wellbeing Research 2017: Employers spend £51-75 per employees on wellbeing strategies

Employers have a median annual spend of between £51 and £75 per employee on wellbeing when they have a formal strategy in place, according to Employee Wellbeing Research 2017: The evolution of workplace wellbeing in the UK; from Reward & Employee Benefits Association (REBA) in association with Punter Southall Health & Protection. The report shows that the spend can be more than three times that of spend per employee when there is no strategy in place with only £1 to £25 spent in such an instance.

However, spend is increasing. More than a third (38.6%) saw their wellbeing spend increase last year and nearly half (45%) expect it to rise further this year.

The study also showed that spending is more likely to rise at organisations that do not currently have a wellbeing strategy (48%) compared to those that already have one in place (41.1%).

“Spend on wellbeing is likely to naturally grow as more organisations embrace it, but it’s also important for businesses to have a proper strategy in place to ensure a return on investment,” said Debi O’Donovan, director at the Reward & Employee Benefits Association.

“Our research also showed that where there was a strategy in place there was a static spend last year and expectation of similar this year for around half of respondents in 2017.”
