Video: REBA New Year Lectures: Act now on auto-enrolment or face harsh penalties, warns professor

Employers who are among the next wave to be sucked into the auto-enrolment pipe must act now to avoid “unfair and disproportionate fines”, according to Robin Ellison, professor in pensions law and economics at City University.

Speaking at the REBA New Year Lectures 2016 Professor Ellison said the risks were too high otherwise.

“If you haven’t auto-enrolled do it now because it’s complicated and takes time and if the regulator can find a reason for fining you they will fine you. The regulators are not being neutral about this. They are looking for scalps and there are heavy fines coming through which are unfair and disproportionate,” he said.

Professor Ellison also warned organisations to ensure they do thorough due diligence if opting for small auto enrolment systems, citing “gigantic fraud” going on in the market.
