Video: REBA New Year Lectures: Why wellbeing needs buy-in and sponsorship from the top

Employee wellbeing needs both buy-in and sponsorship from the top if it is to be achieved within an organisation, according to Rosemary Lemon, group head of reward at Hays.

Speaking at the REBA New Year Lectures 2016 Lemon said that proving wellbeing's worth was vital. “Businesses need to see the value of it and that if you can prove wellbeing makes a difference to productivity you do get engagement. You do need to get sponsorship from the top. HR can coordinate it but they can’t make it happen on their own,” she said.

Employers must get a handle on how their employees truly feel, said Lemon. “When you go around and ask “how are you” and they say “I’m okay” then you take that as being fine.

"We want more than just okay – we want highly motivated, engaged employees who say “yes I feel great about this company.”

Lemon referenced wellbeing indexes she has set up previously using data from employee surveys such as “does my manager care about me”.

“When you can plot indexes for both engagement and wellbeing and then plot performance ratings against that you see that people that have a good sense of wellbeing and engagement also have high performance ratings,” she said.
