Report: The Modern Families Index 2017

The index provides a snapshot of how working families in the UK manage the balance between family life and work. Compiled by Working Families and supported by Bright Horizons, the report asks whether the balance between family and work life matches aspirations, and what the effects of being a working parent and an employee are on family life.

The report covers the following areas:

  • Balancing the twin currencies: time and money
  • Working hours squeezing parents’ family time
  • The impact of time-poverty
  • The ‘flexibility gap’
  • The ‘fatherhood penalty’
  • Sharing caring – mothers, fathers and grandparents.

The index explores the pressure points where family life and work meet, and how these vary according to demographic and other circumstances. It is designed to inform policy, the configuration of the labour market and employment practice.
