Protect your employees' mental health – it’s not a red card offence

Since its launch last year, Legal & General’s Not A Red Card Offence campaign has been a huge success in encouraging employers and employees to talk about mental health – its reached more than seven million people on social media and gathered over 160 business leaders to talk about workplace mental health at our 2017 Not A Red Card forum.

Now we’re introducing the next phase, and that’s to get businesses taking action. So to help, this year we will be providing resources and tools to help facilitate action, as well as celebrating those businesses who are already employing tactics to protect their teams’ mental health.

The Not A Red Card Awards

Legal & General’s new awards look to recognise best practices around Mental Health in the Workplace. We want to celebrate businesses, and their employees, that have developed and implemented successful strategies to tackling mental health issues.

Why it’s important to protect your team’s mental health

Mental health, including stress, is the biggest cause of employee absence in the UK – lasting four weeks or more. It’s also the second biggest cause of shorter absences too. So as you can see, it can have huge impact on business productivity.

Our recent research showed that 78 per cent of employers believe their employees would feel comfortable talking about depression and anxiety at work. Yet only four per cent of employees who have experienced depression, and five per cent who have experienced anxiety, actually feel able to talk to their employer about it in practice.

The case to tackle mental health is clear. We can all benefit from learning about how to create a work environment where employees feel able to talk about their mental wellbeing.
