Employee Wellbeing Research 2018: Mental health focus continues to rise as part of overall wellbeing

The number of organisations addressing mental health within their overall wellbeing strategy has seen a steady growth over the past three years, according to figures from REBA.

The figures, from the Employee Wellbeing Research 2018 published by Reward & Employee Benefits Association (REBA) in association with Punter Southall Health & Protection show that it grew from 78.9% in 2016 to 82% in 2017 and 84.1% in this year’s survey.

However while it is being addressed in a general sense dedicated mental health strategies are rare, with only one in six having a defined mental health strategy in place.

However it looks like that is set to change with over a third (36.5%) saying they plan to implement one in the next 12 months and a further 26.1% saying they plan to do so in the next three years. However one in five (21.6%) said that they had no immediate plans to implement a dedicated mental health strategy.

Debi O’Donovan, director at the Reward & Employee Benefits Association, said:The lack currently of dedicated mental health strategies is disappointing. However with the number of respondents saying that they plan to introduce such a strategy within the next three years we could potentially see more than three-quarters (78.4%) of employers offering them by the early 2020s which is great news."

"Furthermore our study shows a predicted 231% growth in defined mental wellbeing strategies in 2018 alone, showing that organisations are now doing something about it.”
