Video: Nick McClelland on the new approaches to employee wellbeing employers should be considering

Nick McClelland, partner and UK growth leader at Mercer Marsh Benefits, spoke with Debi O’Donovan, co-founder and director at REBA, about the new approaches to employee wellbeing that employers should be considering.

There are so many new wellbeing innovations, approaches and solutions coming into the market that the challenge for organisations is deciding how best to utilise these.

“There is an opportunity for organisations to use this moment – given everything we’re going through with COVID – to really re-evaluate what it is they’re trying to achieve and therefore, plan-out how that starts to look in the future,” says McClelland.

He goes on to add: “From my perspective, the innovation at this moment needs to be less about the points solutions that can support mental health, financial health, physical health – whatever it might be – and more about how we bring all of this together in a coherent way and think about the experience the employee has.”

McClelland and O’Donovan go on to discuss the rise of social wellbeing and how important communities, teams and communication have been in recent months.

“I’ve seen some really good examples of how, by creating those communities, it has almost become a self-fulfilling prophecy of wellbeing, because it allows people to connect to each other which creates the momentum,” explains McClelland.

“What we’re used to in the corporate world is a lot of top-down communication, and so enabling peer-to-peer communication is so important for the success of any wellbeing strategy, and therefore it should underpin all of the initiatives that are ongoing within the wellbeing space.”

McClelland took part in REBA’s exclusive Next Generation Wellbeing breakfast in association with Mercer Marsh Benefits. It brought together employers and industry experts to discuss new approaches to employee wellbeing.
