Video tutorial: Facebook's Julien Lesaicherre on the role of communities in bringing people together

Employees have to make sure their employees know about and can feed back on their reward and benefits programmes or else the best in the world will go unnoticed, according to Julien Lesaicherre, director – workplace at Facebook EMEA.

He said most employers were still using tools such as email to communicate to employees whereas outside of work employees were using tools such as WhatsApp. “When was the last time you sent an email to a friend?” he asked.

Speaking at the REBA Innovation Day he said people loved visual content since they can process it faster than text. “And guess what – emails are not great to share visual content,” he said.

At Facebook he said the company had started to use its own version of Facebook for work. “You have all the features of Facebook, all the features of Messenger but you have only your employees that are sharing, liking and commenting on content about work,” he said.

He said staff quickly moved from email and intranet communication to the new tool and urged others to embrace the same principles. “We have to turn companies into meaningful communities because there is no more meaningful communites than at work,” he said.

He said Facebook had more than 200,000 groups within the company for “literally everything”. “What’s great is you are moving the memory of the company from the inbox to this system which creates an instant memory,” he said, allowing new recruits to simply join the group and see what’s been said before.

This video was recorded at the REBA Innovation Day 2018, held in London on 22 November.
