Video tutorial: Help stop the suffering in silence: strategies for managing employee mental health

Organisations must do more to help to support their staff by better managing mental health at work, according to Vanessa Sallows, benefits and governance director at Legal & General.

"Mental health problems are actually increasing - though that's probably to do with awareness. Stress is now the top cause of long-term absence, according to the CIPD," she said.

Addressing delegates at the REBA Employee Wellbeing Congress 2017 she said her company's research had shown a gap in the employers understanding and comfort of mental health compared to how employees themselves felt about speaking to their employers. "There is a clear disparity between what the employers and employees are thinking," she said. This was especially difficult because people don't know how to deal with mental health issues, as opposed to physical health problems which are easier to diagnose and treat, she pointed out.

This video tutorial was recorded at the REBA Employee Wellbeing Congress 2017 which took place on 22 June.
