Video tutorial: Legal & General’s Vanessa Sallows on tackling mental health at work

The launch of Legal and General’s ‘Not a Red Card’ mental health campaign in May 2017 saw Legal & General adopt a new approach to opening up about mental health, by using sport to better promote the subject.

Explaining the initiative to delegates at the Employee Wellbeing Congress 2018 Vanessa Sallows, benefits and governance director, group protection and insurance at Legal & General, said the company had transferred the values of sportspeople into the workplace with the campaign.

The ‘Not a Red Card’ initiative reached over seven million people on social media and saw the company’s campaign videos, created using sports stars, reach more than 500,000 viewings.

In a forum event in October, the company gathered more than 160 business leaders, mental health experts and sports personalities to discuss ways to tackle mental health – many of which Legal & General is now implementing this year.

Sallows said the company had discovered five common barriers – the challenge of the portrayal of mental health, environmental culture, a lack of role models, poor availability of resources and a lack of education and understanding around mental health problems.

She outlined outcomes and best practice that organisations can put into place to improve on each of the five challenges faced.

“Just like physical illness we all have mental illness and we all have mental health. Sometimes we have really good days and sometimes we have really bad days. It’s about how we can bring our whole self to work,” she said.

This video was recorded at the Employee Wellbeing Congress 2018, held in London on 5 July.
