Video tutorial: Rob Briner, of Queen Mary, University of London on psychological wellbeing defined

Psychological wellbeing is important because it’s good business and also because employers have a duty of care. But are employers doing enough around it for it to actually be effective, asked Rob Briner, professor of organisational psychology and scientific director of Queen Mary, University of London.

Speaking at the REBA Employee Wellbeing Congress 2019, he talked through the evolution of wellbeing and the approach to it throughout history.

He said today to not start with solutions but to start with quality assessed evidence from multiple sources to understand the problem or opportunity before doing something about it. He said to also gather quality evidence from multiple sources about likely solutions.

“If for example I said tell me about your wellbeing problems can you bring some evidence and data showing what they are? How confident would you be that you’d have good quantitative, high-quality evidence about those problems?”

He said whilst there was no shortage of activity around wellbeing of work there are concerns about its effectiveness and value. “Asking more and better questions and trying to answer them rather than just doing stuff will improve our practice.”

This video was recorded at the REBA Employee Wellbeing Congress 2019, held in London on 20 June.
