Video tutorial: Why HR needs to lead the drive for change

Businesses need to change their attitude to change, especially when it comes to HR and reward, according to Rob Boland, group director of product and client success at Reward Gateway.

Speaking at the REBA Innovation Day, Boland said he had had to redefine his opinion of change after working at Amazon. “I realised the existing change mentality I had – which a lot of businesses have today – wasn't going to work.”

He talked about the need for short, sharp iterative change which he said was critical to businesses moving forward and particularly for those in HR. “Change is not something people are comfortable with. Change is seen as creating uncertainty,” he said.

He said businesses had to encourage and embrace feedback since it means people care – whether that feedback is good or bad, and react accordingly.

“I truly think the department in all our businesses that has gone through the biggest transformation is HR,” he said. “HR has become accountable than ever before. Businesses and business performance is more exposed than it’s ever been before,” said Boland.

But he said the growth and benefits of technology also offered exciting opportunities for change which HR professionals should embrace.

He told delegate to love change and not to be afraid of failure – pointing out that nothing great happens without change. “We’re going through a fundamental change but we do have to change our mentality and it’s you guys that have got to lead that change,” he said.

This video was recorded at the REBA Innovation Day, held in London on 23 November, 2017.
