What’s new in health insurance product design to support long Covid?

AXA Health is introducing a new service to help support customers affected by long Covid. This is a potentially debilitating condition affecting around one in five people who’ve tested positive for Covid-19 for more than five weeks and one in 10 for more than 12 weeks, showed findings from the Office for National Statistics on the prevalence of long Covid symptoms and Covid-19 complications (December 2020).

Long Covid is characterised by clusters of symptoms, often overlapping, that can be wide-ranging and fluctuating and are not explained by an alternative diagnosis, according to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence in its Covid-19 rapid guideline: managing the long-term effects of Covid-19. Any of the body’s system can be involved, with individuals typically experiencing breathlessness, chronic fatigue, ‘brain fog’, anxiety and/or stress.

From 30 April 2021, AXA Health customers whose GP or occupational health physician refers them for investigation of long Covid will be offered online or telephone consultations with specialists experienced in treating the condition*.

Where clinically appropriate, customers can also take part in a physiotherapist-led 12-week remote rehabilitation programme, featuring a blend of physical and emotional support.
