Report: A little more conversation

As part of the Institute of Directors's (IoD) mental health in the workplace campaign, it has launched a new report which outlines how businesses can better support employees.

A little more conversation 1

A survey of IoD members found that more than half had been approached by staff suffering mental ill health. However, just 14% have a formal mental health policy and fewer than one in five offer line management training.

The report proposes:

  • Large firms consider giving a non-executive board member responsibility for integrating mental health awareness and training across businesses.
  • The government trials a training scheme for small business owners to help them develop mental health policies.
  • The government should make greater efforts to communicate existing schemes.

The report highlights that poor mental health costs the UK five per cent of GDP and that, by increasing awareness, tackling mental ill health could play a key role in addressing the ‘productivity puzzle’.
