This report highlights NEST’s new research which suggests pension schemes’ environmental and social credentials could be crucial to building trust and confidence among savers.

Report: Building new norms 1

Key findings

  • More workers are now considering the quality of an employer’s pension when deciding where to work – 37 per cent said this was a consideration in 2017 compared with 15 per cent in 2014.
  • More workers now think saving in a pension is the normal thing for people like them – 46 per cent believe this in 2017 compared with 25 per cent in 2014. However, engagement is still low, with 17 per cent unable to name their pension provider.
  • Responsible investment is becoming more important to pension savers. 47 per cent said it matters a lot to them that their pension scheme considers how the companies and markets they invest in are run, and how they treat people and the planet.
  • Responsible investment could build trust and confidence in pension saving. Half of respondents said that information about what NEST does as a responsible investor would improve their impression of the company.
