This report from Willis Towers Watson provides detailed insights into the European regulatory landscape, especially the impact of the Shareholders Rights Directive, and offers an analysis on CEO pay levels and structures.

CEO pay landscape 1

Key findings:

  • 1,402 million Euro was the median base salary level for CEOs in 2016. Compared with the previous year, the median did not significantly increase.
  • 67% of companies have shareholding policies. The median guideline level remains 300% of base salary for the CEO.
  • 126% of base salary was the median actual bonus received. However, half of the companies analysed require their executive to defer their bonus - typically 50% of bonus paid.
  • Total shareholder return (TSR) is the most common performance metric attached to long-term incentive plans.
