Report: Developing the mid-life MOT

Showcasing four case studies, this Centre for Ageing Better report outlines the response to the recommendation to introduce a ‘mid-life MOT’ in John Cridland’s independent review of State Pension age.

Report: Developing the mid-life MOT 1

Key findings

  • Several reasons for introducing mid-life MOTs were found, including the need to: respond to Brexit; respond to pension freedoms; support working carers; support older workers; boost productivity; and retain skilled employees.
  • All organisations’ participating in the pilot agreed on the benefits of engaging with people in mid-life on issues that would help prepare them for retirement.
  • Insights from the pilots suggest the need for a mid-life MOT, particularly around the area of financial and pension planning.
  • Across the pilots, demand for support was, in most cases greater than envisaged; organisations did not have to persuade people to participate; in some cases, sessions had to be extended to accommodate demand.

Supporting workers in mid-life is a key part of being an age-friendly employer. Four organisations – Aviva, Legal & General, the Pensions Advisory Service and Mercer – have developed and tested how the concept could be delivered in practice. This report summarises the actions taken, and the lessons learnt.
