Report: Getting to grips with Grey Fleet

Organisations across the UK are missing a huge opportunity to slash their business travel costs, as well as cut harmful emissions and improve road safety, this report reveals.

Organisations across the UK are missing a huge opportunity to slash their business travel costs, as well as cut harmful emissions and improve road safety, this report reveals.

The report suggests that employers are spending around £5.5 billion on the grey fleet – private vehicles that are used for business, with 12 billion miles driven each year in grey fleet vehicles. These are responsible for a significant portion of the £2.7 billion costs associated with work-related road accidents.

As well as summarising the latest insight the report also includes case studies from companies that have achieved both cost and emissions savings by tackling grey fleet.

Key findings:

  • There are an estimated 14 million grey fleet vehicles on UK roads
  • 11.8 million are associated with the private sector and 2.2 million from the public sector
  • Private sector grey fleet costs nearly £5 billion and covers 11 billion miles
  • In the public sector use of grey fleet vehicles cost the taxpayer £786 million per year with the bulk of the 1.5 million miles driven by employees of the NHS, local authorities and civil service.
