Report: The contemporary drivers of mental health

Employers can be part of the solution in understanding and addressing mental health concerns, through helping to prevent issues from occurring, detecting any problems early on, providing rapid interventions, and supporting employees who have longer-term issues. This report from Aon offers some top tips on what employers can do to tackle mental health issues.

Report: The contemporary drivers of mental health 1

Key findings

  • Nearly half of employees report experiencing poor mental health in their current job, while only half of them have talked to their employer about it. Furthermore, as many as a quarter of employees are struggling in silence.
  • Mental health is dynamic and influenced by many factors, both in and out of the workplace. Although some issues may be difficult to tackle, Aon believes that the workplace is an ideal setting to be a force for good, and everyone benefits – the employee, employer, and society as a whole.
  • Aon offers tips in five key areas: the power of data; appropriate use of benefits and services; taking a strategic approach; communicating and engaging employees; and creating a culture of openness.

This report also considers the broad factors that contribute to or cause mental health problems – highlighting the dynamic nature of mental health, and illustrating the need for a broader, more comprehensive approach to improving mental health through the workplace.
