Research: Pensions & Investments 300 Analysis

Assets under management at the world's largest pension funds increased in value by 6.1% in 2016, according to research from Willis Towers Watson.

Key findings:

  • Over the last five years North America's annualised growth rate increased by 6.7%, compared with 3.1% and 2.8% in Europe and Asia-Pacific respectively.
  • The US holds the largest share of pension assets across the top 300 funds. The UK accounts for 4.8% of total assets.
  • A total of 28 new funds have entered the top 300 ranking over the last five years.
  • Defined benefits assets increased by 5.6% in 2016, compared with 9.6% for defined contribution plans.
