HM Revenue & Customs has published data showing its analysis of the incomes of UK tax payers for 2016-17.

Its headline results show there were a total of 31.3 million individual income tax payers – of which 17.9 million were male and 13.3 million were female. Compared to the previous year, these figures represent an increase in total income tax payers of 0.2 million.

The report contains a medley of interesting employment and pensions and income tax data, including revealing exactly how much UK employee earn – showing that:

  • 10% of taxpayers had an income before tax of less than £13,300
  • 10% of taxpayers had an income before tax of more than £53,600
  • The highest numbers of tax payers were in the 45-49 age group
