Research: IFS Working Paper - The effect of AE on employees working for small employers

A new working paper from the Institute for Fiscal Studies has revealed auto-enrolment has been responsible for a dramatic increase in the number of workers employed by very small businesses (those with between 2-29 staff), participating in workplace pensions.

It finds:

  • 70% of targeted employees in this category now have a workplace pension
  • This has increased from 45% before auto-enrolment occurred

However, it also notes that this is some way below the 90% coverage achieved by large organisations.
