The index, which records how people feel about their personal health and wellbeing as well as how they perceive their physical, financial, workplace, social and family wellness, is updated annually to see if trends can be spotted.

This year, stress was a particularly high-scoring area of concern. Some 84% of people globally said they are stressed, with 13% considering it unmanageable. While nearly half get support from their employer, only 28% thought it was adequate.

This year it also finds:

  • Overall the global wellbeing average has risen, from a score of 61.2 in 2018 to 62.0 in 2019
  • The UK sits just above average with a score of 62.5, but is a long way behind India, which heads the list with a score of 74.8 and Saudi Arabia, which comes second at 67.9
  • Around 49% feel senior management do not seriously support wellness programmes
