Research: Overstretched, overdrawn, undeserved

Analysis by The Money and Mental Health Policy Institute, sponsored by Salary Finance, found that financial worries could affect employees' ability to function at work by impacting their sleep, concentration and motivation.

Key findings:

  • Money worries are a common cause of mental health problems, with 67% of employees who are struggling with their finances reporting this to be the case.

  • One in four people with a mental health problem is also in problem debt, and half of people in financial difficulties have a mental health problem.

  • A quarter of the UK workforce are, to some extent, experiencing financial insecurity.

  • One in five employees report that they are just about managing financially, while a further 5% say they are finding things difficult.

The analysis of data from 40,000 households shines a light on the relationship between mental health and financial concerns.
