Group Income Protection plays a pivotal role in aiding employees’ return to work following ill-health. That is the message of Aviva’s report, which provides insights into its 2024 claims data.

Over the course of a year, Aviva provided clinical and vocational rehabilitation support to over 2,600 employees across 292 employers.

Mental health accounted for 47% of all referrals for rehabilitation support and nearly 96% of individuals receiving mental health support such as counselling, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and psychotherapy returned to work within the deferred period.

Other claims figures include:
1. 13% of all referrals for rehabilitation support related to cancer, an increase from 9% on the previous year and 82% of cancer survivors returned to or remained in work.
2. Musculoskeletal claims accounted for 10% of all rehabilitation cases, and 97% of those employees returned to work within the deferred period.
3. The number of people supported through the neurodiversity pathways increased – making up 6% of referrals in 2024 compared to 3% in 2023.
