Boostworks report: Manager in the Middle
New research from Boostworks, the employee recognition, rewards and benefits app, in partnership with Censuswide reveals a recognition problem hiding in plain sight which starts further up the chain than most businesses realise.
Surveying more than 2,000 UK employees, HR decision makers and line managers, the Manager in the Middle report uncovers a cascade effect running through UK workplaces: managers who feel recognised by senior leadership are far more likely to recognise their own teams. Managers who don't, often can't.
The numbers tell a stark story. 96% of managers feel personally responsible for driving engagement, morale and wellbeing, yet 74% face structural barriers that stop them recognising their teams properly. Meanwhile, 92% of HR leaders believe managers are equipped and appropriately recognised, but only 65% of managers actually feel that recognition - a gap that widens further for Gen X managers, the most under-recognised group in leadership.
With 91% of employees saying their manager is a key factor in whether they stay or leave, that gap matters far more than a HR statistic - it's a retention risk. And it's one many managers are already trying to close themselves with 37% of managers having paid for team treats out of their own pocket.
Manager in the Middle sets out exactly where this gap starts, how it spreads, and what UK businesses can do to close it - for their managers, and everyone in their teams.
