Video: REBA New Year Lectures: Businesses must "strike out and do things differently" in 2016

Businesses should “strike out and do things differently” if they are to get ahead in 2016, according to Personal Group chief executive officer Mark Scanlon.

Speaking at the REBA New Year Lectures 2016 Scanlon said that was his business’ next step in 2016. “We have to make sure we have the elements in place but the important thing is striking out and doing things differently and picking on the things that are going to win because we have to be able to get ahead of the cost wave coming,” he said.

He likened his business challenges to the levers in a railway control room. “There are a lot of levers and a choice – what are you going to spend your time on as a business?”

Personal Group, a 30 year old business, is based on four simple values, said Scanlon, one of which is to run the company as if you own it. "That’s beginning to work. We only have so many people in our organisation so we have to choose what it is we need to do and what we aren’t going to do and get on with it. Our challenge is to innovate and that will drag our company and other companies in the country up,” he said.
