L&G report: Decades Ahead

This report from L&G and Public First highlights systemic barriers to retirement adequacy across the UK.

The Decades Ahead (2026) report finds that more than two in five (41%) workers aged 25–55 are off track for a sufficient retirement income.

The report introduces a new "Minimum, Replacement, Rent" (MRR) adequacy standard to better reflect evolving economic realities like living alone and renting in later life. It also reports that over a third (35%) of currently employed adults are not saving into a pension at all.

The research identifies three core structural and behavioural drivers of under-saving:

  1. Long periods out of pension schemes
  2. Default contribution rates that fall short for middle- and high-earners
  3. Increasing reliance on rented accommodation during retirement.

The Decades Ahead report also finds that workers in midlife (aged 40–54) represent the most vulnerable demographic. This cohort shows high levels of disengagement, with over two in five (41%) not interacting with their pension over the past year.

Decades Ahead is L&G's long-term commitment to both helping people achieve greater financial security and investing for a more prosperous economy.
