The shortage in drivers of large goods vehicles (LGV) across the UK has been recognised for a number of years but the ongoing pandemic and Brexit has thrown this into even sharper focus.

Employers are being forced to take significant reward actions to recruit new drivers and to retain existing staff. Cendex has spoken to a number of the largest employers of LGV drivers in the UK, both from the distribution and retail sectors, and all are telling the same story – they are operating in an increasingly challenging environment when it comes to resourcing drivers of large goods vehicles.

Cendex survey manager, Jennie Jakubowski saw strong average growth in driver reward in 2021. The headline average rate of pay increase may attract the most notice – at the 3.0% 12 month increase in basic salary is almost double the current rate of CPI and significantly above the current rate of RPI – but the picture is not uniform across the board.
