Report: The Changing Educational Attainment of Graduate Recruits to Major Public Sector Occupations

This Institute for Fiscal Studies report assesses how the continued stagnation in public sector wages will affect the public sector's ability to recruit and retain high-quality workers.

Graduate recruits in the public sector 1

The report examines how levels of education achievement have changed over time for new graduate recruits to major public sector occupations relative to all occupations. Although education achievement is not a direct measure of worker quality, it is likely to correlate to individuals’ skills and the wages they are likely to be able to receive.

In particular, the report looks in detail at trends for teachers, doctors, nurses and NHS professionals allied to medicine, as well as civil servants, police officers and prison service workers.
