Avoiding information overload: using technology at work to boost wellbeing, not damage it

Technology is evolving on a massive scale. More people are using smartphones, wearables and social media than ever before, and many workplaces are adopting new technology to improve efficiency and productivity.

Studies have produced results showing an increase in social media and technology correlating with reduced socialisation in its 'traditional' sense, with work life being affected too.

However, there are endless benefits of implementing technology in the workplace. For example, an Employee Assistance Programme can offer easily accessible online support for those wishing to discuss issues affecting them. This can help to boost wellbeing by increasing staff morale and ensuring they feel valued and supported as employees. With this kept in mind, there are still factors employers need to consider about technology's role in the workplace.

Accessibility

Younger generations may find technology is second-nature to them. However, other people in your workforce might not be as adept at picking up the habits that new technology demands, and may feel overwhelmed.

This can leave some employees to feel left behind, creating a barrier to their wellbeing. Ensure that those who find it difficult to get along with new technology have access to the same opportunities as those who find it easier.

Attitudes

Boosting employees' wellbeing can be helped through connecting more people together and making each other more accessible and easy to contact. Unfortunately, with new technology comes new ways to communicate, and this can mean negative attitudes get in the way of employee wellbeing.

Cyberbullying can cause absenteeism in the workplace as well as even cause employees to leave. Here, it's vital to set ground rules to encourage a positive environment in the workplace and let others know that cyberbullying will not be tolerated.

Attention

A good work-life balance is vital to any employee's wellbeing. With technology being accessed at all times, the line between work and life can blur.

Technology may seep into workplace productivity and affect a person's ability to progress and work effectively. A person may then feel undervalued and as though they are not keeping up with the team, damaging overall wellbeing.

It's important to switch off and take a break. Whilst technology in the form of apps for meditation and mindfulness can help to do this, nothing beats a good walk in the park away from the screen.

In summary

Technology opens up a world of opportunities for your employees, increasing accessibility, improving wellbeing and increasing motivation. It's a good idea to set policies and boundaries in place for utilising technology in the workplace, as this can ensure your employees are able to enjoy the positives of a world that is constantly connected.
