Why health and wellbeing should be your top priority

Promoting health and wellbeing is an integral part to improving employee motivation and maintaining employee engagement.

Looking after and prioritising your employees' health and wellbeing promotes success in the workplace, meaning staff are less likely to take time off due to stress related causes.

Why else should companies consider implementing strategies to improve health and wellbeing in the workplace?

Lower staff turnover

In order to reduce staff turnover, it's important to take into account the health and wellbeing of your employees. Ask yourself whether programmes could be put in place to reduce stress and improve exercise, for example a Cycle to Work Scheme or counselling service such as the Employee Assistance Programme.

By implementing programmes that boost health and wellbeing, employees will feel looked after and valued. This means you are likely to find it easier to attract and retain top talent, reducing the likelihood of early retirements and giving employees an incentive to stay with your company.

Employee engagement

Another benefit to boosting health and wellbeing in the workplace is that it serves to improve employee engagement. With less distractions on stress, excess workload and illness, employees are more likely to be focused on their work.

Employees will feel that their employers really do care about them as individuals, and are more likely to enjoy coming to work to go the extra mile for an organisation that prioritises their wellbeing.

Preventing long-term sickness

Taking a proactive approach to employee wellbeing and health means that you have an improved chance of preventing problems that could lead to long-term or exacerbated sickness leave, as such companies can reduce costs incurred through absence that could be prevented.

Implementing programmes such as Employee Assistance could provide a solution for employees through confidential counselling. As well as this, health cash plans and hospital treatment insurance mean that employees may be less likely to take extended periods of time off work, as implementing such programmes could address problems that may cause absence.

Why the workplace?

The workplace is uniquely positioned to improve health and wellbeing of employees, as it's likely they spend most of their time at work. Employees can be encouraged to cycle to work using a Cycle to Work Scheme, encouraged to talk about what's affecting them as a result of Employee Assistance Programmes, assisted with healthcare costs and more.
