Ways executive incentives are changing to meet ESG targets: how institutional investor pressure is shifting senior reward

ESG targets are increasingly being applied by institutional investors to listed companies, meaning executive reward teams and remuneration committees need to rethink targets for financial and non-financial incentives.

Peter McDonald plays a leading role in the Remuneration Team at NatWest, including ESG elements, defining organisational goals, performance management and reporting, group-wide bonus pool determination and Board committee management.
Peter has had varied roles across HR in his career, and now focusses on working across the control functions at the highest level, ensuring goals are aligned to the overall Natwest Strategy, linked with rewards to achieve these goals, and measurements in place to review this effectively.
Claire Yule, President, Reward & Mobility, and P&O Group Functions, Wood
Claire Yule is highly skilled in executive compensation and governance, HR strategy in support of the company’s strategic goals, and working in partnership with the business to identify innovative global solutions.
Her areas of focus include reward transparency and governance, DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion), wellbeing, margin enhancement, employee and investor engagement, future skills, and talent succession. Claire is secretary to the remuneration committee and a trustee for the Wood pension plan with over £3bn of assets.
Nathan Birtle, Senior Vice President, Diligent
Nathan Birtle is responsible for commercial teams in Europe, Middle East and Africa, and has been with Diligent for 6 years. In recent engagements he has focused on impact of governance analytics, including Board effectiveness and Executive compensation benchmarking.
Prior to this he led commercial teams for software companies in areas such as Quality Management and Process Automation. Nathan has a degree in Computer Science and Mathematics from the University of Bristol.
