Boostworks report: The Deskless Disconnect

This report reveals disparities in how organisations manage, recognise and reward deskless workers compared with office-based and hybrid staff.

As workplace systems are traditionally designed around office settings (e.g. intranets, in-person meetings), frontline employees are often structurally isolated.

This Boostworks report, based on Censuswide research of 2,000 UK employees, finds that deskless employees are nearly four times as likely as hybrid staff to have no relationship with their line manager, with more than one in 10 (12.7%) receiving no wellbeing check-ins.

Over a quarter (26.6%) of deskless workers say recognition matters more than financial rewards (versus 19.5% for office staff). Despite this, they are significantly less likely to receive praise in meetings, formal awards, or executive recognition.

This disconnect directly impacts performance, motivation and retention, driving disengaged frontline staff to quietly stop putting in extra effort rather than voicing issues. HR leaders acknowledge this divide: almost two-thirds (62%) of HR decision-makers say their company rewards desk-based staff more often.
