Video tutorial: Willis Towers Watson urges employers to provide digital wellbeing guidance

The landscape of digital wellbeing and healthcare is changing dramatically but its increased complexity can cause confusion for employees, according to John Heatley, director at Willis Towers Watson.

He said employees needed to be able to find the best solution for them but it was their employers who should help to guide them. “Employees say that guidance should come from their HR team,” Heatley told delegates at the REBA Innovation Day 2018.

“The key is using technology effectively in the right circumstances,” he said.

Currently technology like AI is largely transactional yet there are times that emotional intelligence needs to play a role, especially when it comes to issues such as mental health. “How does AI pick up on emotional cues,” asked Heatley. “The challenge is how do we balance technology and emotions."

Julie Waddington, associate director at Willis Towers Watson, outlined two case studies that the company has been working including one on The Telegraph. “Historically twice a year they did health checks but decided to change that to target more people so put onsite health checks for five days a week twice a year,” she said.

Participation has quadrupled to around 400 staff with the extra data allowing The Telegraph to get a broader view of employee health risks within the organisation and using the data to allow the business to start refining health advice and information.

Employees meanwhile get extra information about their health but still have the ability to access traditional solutions.

“Clients are looking for a more consistent model between a blending of new technologies and existing programmes that are in place that can offer them a more joined-up solution and provide the benefits in a more holistic way,” she said.
