AXA Health report: Mind Health Report 2025

This is the fifth edition of the AXA Mind Health Study, which charts the mental wellbeing of people worldwide.

The Mind Health Index (MHI) gauges people’s current mental state through four categories: flourishing, getting by, languishing, struggling.

This year, 25% of respondents are flourishing, 32% are getting by, 29% are languishing, and 14% are struggling. People in the UK score somewhere in the middle, and those in France, the US and China are more likely to be flourishing.

A much higher percentage (42%) of young adults are potentially affected by depression, anxiety or stress at severe or more extreme levels, than the general population (25%).

Specific mental health stressors for young people are loneliness and social isolation (51%, compared with 40% of the general population) and excessive use of social media and digital devices (52%, compared to 36% of the general population).

The main factors negatively impacting mental health are:

  • Financial instability and job insecurity (53%)
  • Uncertainty about the future in a rapidly changing world (53%)
  • Constant exposure to negative news in the media (45%)
  • Social and political unrest (42%)
  • Loneliness and social isolation (42%).
