Dr David Batman science adviser for Virgin Pulse on the post COVID-19 wellness landscape
Speaking at REBA's Employee Wellbeing Congress 2020, Dr Batman suggested that before coronavirus, wellbeing was not a high priority on the business agenda. However, following the worldwide pandemic, organisations will have to begin to look at their wellbeing approach in light of the rise in mental health issues, the long-term effects of COVID-19 and the impact of chronic illnesses that have gone untreated during lockdown.
He added that this is an unprecedented event that has proven the link between wellbeing and economic health, and will require businesses to look forward to create a new 'playbook' for dealing with wellness.
Organisations need to prepare for the long-term implications of a post COVID-19 world and look at putting employees' wellbeing at the 'first and foremost' of the business agenda. Health should encompass physical, mental and social wellbeing and they should not be devolved from each other, he added.
