Research: Absence management 2015

The sixteenth annual CIPD Absence Management survey, in partnership with Simplyhealth, explores absence management trends, policy and practice in the UK to understand how companies can reduce incidents of absenteeism within their businesses.

  • Shows that 31% of employers have seen an increase in so-called presenteeism in the last 12 months (ie when staff turn up for work despite being ill)
  • That presenteeism is more likely to increase where the culture of working long hours is seen to be the norm
  • Shows that the average level of employee absence has risen slightly to 6.9 days per employee, increasing most in the private sector
  • Examines the cost of absence and shows that less than two fifths of organisations monitor this metric
  • Highlights the main causes with minor illness the most common
  • Suggests how employers can better manage absence with written absence/ attendance management policies and collection of absence data the most popular methods
