Video tutorial: Janet Pope, of Lloyds Banking Group, on the importance of mental health in wellbeing

Organisations need to address the various components that make up wellbeing in a joined up and holistic way in order to maximise benefits from them with mental health key, according to Janet Pope, chief of staff and group director, responsible business and inclusion at Lloyds Banking Group.

Speaking at the REBA Employee Wellbeing Congress 2019, Pope said of all the components mental health was one of the most important to address. “The business case for taking action on mental health is completely overwhelming.”

Sharing more about the Lloyds Banking Group experience she said organisations needed to recognise that just as with physical health mental health can also fluctuate. “In the financial services sector we’ve historically had a really poor understanding of mental health and personal resilience.”

She said awareness was required across the whole spectrum of mental health conditions from stress and anxiety through to conditions such as bipolar. “It’s a mindset that we are seeking to adopt at Lloyds, that people can thrive with mental health challenges in the workplace.”

“Our approach has been about talking to colleagues and learning about the actions that will actually make a positive difference.”

Changes have included a number of new approaches including a leadership resilience programme, additional support for colleagues and a culture that encourages staff to talk and share their experiences and tips for improving wellbeing that is led from the top.

This video was recorded at the REBA Employee Wellbeing Congress 2019, held in London on 20 June.
