Video tutorial: Paul Hay of Lendlease Europe on how it was recognised by Mind for mental health

Mental health is an essential part of health and safety at work but can often be overlooked. That needs to change, according to Paul Hay, EHS Training Manager - Lendlease Europe.

He presented a case study into what Lendlease Europe had done in terms of mental health, in an industry commonly suffering from stigma around the subject, to delegates at the REBA Employee Wellbeing Congress 2019.

He cited the high rate of suicides and stress within the construction industry. “The question that often gets asked is why? For me it’s dead simple – it's because it’s full of men. It’s a tough industry. It usually involves a lot of long hours, a lot of working away from home. It’s also quite an old-fashioned industry in its approach to things like wellbeing,” he said.

He said Lendlease Europe concentrated on how to educate people, how to support them and how to promote what the company was trying to do from a mental health perspective. He outlined all the measures that Lendlease Europe had undertaken practically to improve mental health within its business including mental health first aid training as well as working with specialist charities such as Sands. “We try to give our mental health first aiders specialist training to deal with specialist issues,” he said.

The company has since been recognised by Mind as a leading employer for mental health and wellbeing, he explained.

This video was recorded at the REBA Employee Wellbeing Congress 2019, held in London on 20 June.
