Report: Thriving, striving, or just about surviving?

Analysis of how workers are faring in terms of their experiences of economic security and the quality of work in the UK, has been undertaken by the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce’s (RSA) new Future Work Centre.

Thriving, striving or just about surviving? 1

Key findings:

  • More than a quarter of workers do not feel like they earn enough to maintain a decent standard of living, with a third of the workforce considering themselves to be ‘just about managing’.
  • 43 per cent do not have anyone in their household who they could depend on to support them financially in the event of hardship.
  • Around 28 per cent of workers feel less secure in their jobs than they did five years ago.
  • Nearly one-third work excessive hours, and 47 per cent often find work stressful. Just 40 per cent of workers feel that they have good opportunities for career progression.

The report has compiled seven portraits of modern work in the UK. They reflect a more nuanced analysis of these issues, helping RSA to better understand who is having a good experience and who needs more support.
