Report: Living Wage Research for KPMG

Around 21 per cent of employees earn below the real Living Wage, with an estimated 5.5 million workers struggling to get out of in-work poverty, research conducted by Markit for KPMG has found.

Key findings:

  • The number of people earning below the real Living Wage is down by 100,000 compared with last year’s findings.
  • Around a quarter of women earn less than the real Living Wage, compared with 16 per cent of men.
  • Roughly 3.1 million part-time employees earn below the real Living Wage, compared with 2.4 million full-time workers.
  • Northern Ireland has the highest proportion of jobs paid below the real Living Wage (26 per cent), followed by the East Midlands, Yorkshire & Humber, Wales and the West Midlands, all of which were around 24 per cent.
  • Those working in the hospitality sector, particularly bar and waiting staff, were most likely to receive pay below the Living Wage.
