Video tutorial: How Causeway Technologies used an evidence-based mental wellbeing strategy

Working in a competitive, high-pressured environment Causeway Technologies realised it needed to have a resilient workforce and needed to invest in its wellbeing programme early, according to Fiona Buchanan, executive vice president HR at Causeway Technologies. Without such a strategy she said the company faced the danger of staff stress and burnout.

Speaking at the Employee Wellbeing Congress 2018, she said the company spent time gathering data to understand what it was telling it – from absence data to health assessment analysis.

“We collect up all of that and it informs us where the pressure points are and what we need to focus on,” said Buchanan. “Ultimately we are trying to understand what the causes are and understanding if stress is the problem, what is the cause of the stress.”

She said language was also important – particularly in an 80 per cent male dominated environment.

“For me to start talking about mental health would have been a complete disaster. We needed to find a way to open up discussions, to engage the workforce, to get people talking about their mental health. But I felt that mental health has quite negative connotations so we have been very careful to talk about mental health in a different way – a more positive, proactive way,” she said.

As a result, she explained that the company had focused on language such as becoming a corporate athlete and building resilience.
