5 films that also include great lessons for business

Work might be the last thing on your mind when you’re choosing a film to unwind in front of on a Friday night. But if you pop one of these in the DVD player you may pick up some valuable business tips. Here are five films we think can teach everyone a lesson or two.

1) The Social Network

Facebook is one of the biggest businesses in the world and the story of how it grew from a college student’s dorm room to a multi-million dollar enterprise is a fascinating one.

Key takeaway: Believe in your ideas. Don’t just presume they’ll never come to anything. With a bit of hard work they could be the next big thing.

2) Wall Street

The ultimate business film. Stockbroker Bud Fox becomes immensely wealthy after impressing his idol, Wall Street legend Gordon Gekko. But once he gets caught up in Gekko’s ‘greed is good’ philosophy, he also loses his sense of ethics.

Key takeaway: He may make a lot of business mistakes during the film, but Fox did one thing right – he was 100% dedicated to what he wanted to do, going as far as to approach Gekko about a job 59 days a in a row.

3) The Intern

Robert De Niro’s retired baby boomer is bored so he decides to re-enter the workforce as an intern at an online fashion site owned by Anne Hathaway’s character Jules. He struggles at first, but soon becomes a valued member of the team.

Key takeaway: It takes a range of different skillsets and experiences to build a successful workforce.

4) Horrible Bosses

Three workers plot to kill their abusive, overbearing bosses after deciding that they simply can’t go on working for them any longer.

Key takeaway: Treat your employees well. If you don’t they hopefully won’t take as drastic action as the film’s heroes, but the chances are they will leave.

5) Moneyball

A great one for sports fans, but it also has a valuable business lesson. Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill star in this tale of a baseball manager who must put together a winning side with hardly any money. He’s forced to get creative and use new methods to find and retain key players.

Key takeaway: Having a big budget isn’t the only way to build a successful team and stand out from the competition; you just need to think outside the box.
