Video: Singer Will Young tells REBA's Debi O'Donovan how work cultures create wellbeing and purpose

Seven years ago, at the zenith of his work and surrounded by the fruits of his success singer Will Young said he sat down and thought: “I’m absolutely miserable.” What followed was a breakdown that included post-traumatic stress disorder and disassociation. “I got extremely ill. It was a little bit like being a ghost and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone,” said Young.

With therapy Young has got better but now is more focused on treating himself kindly – taking on the role of both employee and employer, he told delegates at the REBA Employee Wellbeing Congress 2019.

He works a four-day week to ensure he doesn’t overwork himself and allows himself to take time out if things are getting bad. “It’s made such a huge difference. My work has not suffered at all and my wellbeing is really good,” he said.

Although Young may be in a privileged position where he is able to do that he encouraged organisations to consider what they are doing for their employees. “Companies have to address it now. The compost has changed. The pressure is now on them,” he said. “Work is always going to be stressful but it’s about helping people manage it.”

This video was recorded at the REBA Employee Wellbeing Congress 2019, held in London on 20 June.
