ABI report: Closing the Evidence Gap: How Insurance Supports Good Health and Productivity

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has collated data from its health and protection members to demonstrate the impact of insurer-provided health services on workplace health.

For the first time, the ABI has collected data from its health and protection members to show how many people use insurer-provided health services and to demonstrate the impact of insurer-provided vocational rehabilitation on workplace health.

In this report, it presents key findings and recommendations aimed at helping employers and individuals reduce NHS backlogs, increase workforce participation, and improve the health and wellbeing of the nation.

Key findings

  • Nearly nine in 10 (86%) of people who accessed insurer-provided vocational rehabilitation were successfully supported to stay in work or return to work following an absence.
  • More than half of customers (51%) who accessed rehabilitation services provided by insurers received support for a mental health condition. Approximately one in four (24%) remained well enough to work and two in three (64%) were supported to return to work.
  • Over 1.6 million people used the health services available to them through insurance 5.5 million times in 2021.
