Adapting employer health benefits: A how‑to guide

Employer-funded health benefits need a rethink if they are to work as strategic tools for workforce sustainability and performance.

The UK’s health gap – the disparity in employment rates and opportunities between healthy workers and those with health conditions – is a growing challenge for businesses and one that employers are increasingly being called upon to address.

In November, Sir Charlie Mayfield launched the Keep Britain Working Final report, which said that employers “must be in the lead” when it comes to supporting employee health.

In his foreword, he said: “Employers are uniquely placed to ‘do’ prevention – by encouraging safe and early conversations about emerging health issues, making reasonable adjustments, supporting people swiftly, and offering flexibility for treatment and phased returns.”

Yet, employers are facing their own challenges when working to sustain their employer-funded health models.

REBA’s latest report Bridging the UK health gap: employer-funded health benefits in a changing landscape – produced in partnership with Mercer Marsh Benefits – shows how organisations can overcome the challenges facing workforce health and future-proof their health strategies.

The report considers why employers are moving towards preventative, data-driven and inclusive approaches to workplace health and wellbeing, and how strong governance can balance cost with impact.

It’s a practical roadmap for adapting employer-funded health benefits to meet the needs of tomorrow’s workforce.

Packed with fresh data, expert insight and real-world case studies, the report explores how preventative measures such as health screenings and early interventions are becoming essential tools for managing both cost and risk.

It also highlights the key questions employers should be asking of their insurers and providers as pressure mounts to redesign healthcare pathways for greater equity and workforce relevance.

Ill-health is now a business-critical issue. Those that act now will not only help close the UK’s health gap but also attract, retain and empower a healthier, more resilient workforce.
