Why do you think that employee wellbeing in increasingly seen as an important discussion to be had at board level within employer organisations?

Because poor employee wellbeing is enough to run a business into the ground. It impacts productivity and breeds stress across the organisation. Ignoring this only makes things worse and we all, including the board, need to be promoting a supportive, healthy environment.

What do you think that employers, generally speaking, could do better when it comes to employee wellbeing?

To recognise that physical health, mental health, wellbeing and productivity are all intrinsically linked and to ensure that the wellbeing strategy incorporates all areas in detail.

What, in your opinion, is the single most important factor determining the success of an employee wellbeing strategy?

A long-term sustainable approach involving all levels equally, which is focused on turning strategy into process to facilitate culture change.

What three things does an employer need to focus on to create a cultural change that supports employee wellbeing?

Firstly, policies and processes must be aligned to support change. Then, the senior management team and line managers need to be committed, competent and trained. Finally, staff must be able to talk and support, with initiatives in place to support that.

What do you think is the key benefit to winning an Employee Wellbeing Award?

Recognition and confidence that you are a leader in this area, operating above and beyond ‘best practice’

The Employee Wellbeing Awards 2019 are open for entries until 16 November
