Employee Wellbeing Research 2018: Boards have mental wellbeing as top concern

When it comes to wellbeing three out of five employers (59.7%) say that this is the area of employee wellbeing their board members are most concerned about.

The conclusion comes from the Employee Wellbeing Research 2018 published by Reward & Employee Benefits Association (REBA) in association with Punter Southall Health & Protection.

The survey showed employers believe that dealing with common mental health conditions, such as stress, anxiety and depression, is three times more important than general physical wellbeing which was cited by one in five (19.5%) as their biggest concern.

Debi O’Donovan, director at the Reward & Employee Benefits Association, said: “Mental health in the workplace is gaining greater attention than ever, particularly following the publication of the Stevenson/Farmer review in October. The fact that board directors and senior managers are realising its importance – and more putting it as a board level concern is an encouraging sign.”

However the survey showed there was still more to be doing about being more open and transparent in reporting about mental health in their organisations. In the private sector only 5.2% report on mental health. This compares to 12.5% in the not for profit sector and 28.2% in the public sector.

Whilst around a third plan to introduce mental health reporting in the near future the rest say they have no plans to introduce such reporting within their organisations.
