Claro Wellbeing report: How wellbeing washing hurts an organisation and its people

The first report of its kind, 'Wellbeing Washing – The True Cost' provides a comprehensive review of the current state of wellbeing washing and its impact in the UK.

Based on a nationally-representative survey of 1,000 adults conducted in May 2023, this report from Claro Wellbeing reveals the current state of wellbeing washing in the UK – and offers constructive tips on how to avoid it.

Key findings:

  • More than a third (38%) of people think their employer is wellbeing washing.
  • One in five employees says their employer has been criticised for wellbeing and mental health conduct in the past.
  • One in six employees says that their employer lost trust as a result of wellbeing washing or poor conduct, and in 10% of cases it reduced share value.

The report also highlights the worst affected industries, the consequences of wellbeing washing, the link between financial and mental wellbeing and provides seven tips on how to avoid wellbeing washing.

"In many cases, wellbeing washing is not intentional and businesses may not even be aware they are doing it. But what’s clear from our research is that it’s having a damaging impact on both employees and organisations." Stacey Lowman, Head of Employee Wellbeing at Claro Wellbeing.
